MESSIANIC OPENING (Others may drop down to “Call to Worship”)
(Written for families — modify parts for other small groups or for individuals)

Lighting of Candles
The father says:
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with Elohim, and the Word was Elohim … Through him all things were made … In him was life, and that life was the light of men. … The Word became flesh and lived for a while among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth (John 1:1,3,14). Yahshua is ‘the light of the world’ (John 8:12), the ‘true light that gives light to every man’ (John 1:9). Through him we are empowered to be lights in the world (Phil. 2:15). As we light these two Shabbat candles, we set this night apart unto Yahweh to remember that we are given both physical rest and spiritual rest through the gift of Yahweh by his Son, Yashua Messiah.
The mother lights two candles while saying this blessing:
Blessed are you, O Yahweh our Elohim, King of the universe, who has set us apart by your Word and has called us to be the light of the world.

Blessing Yahweh for the Wine
The father pours wine into a cup, and holds it up, saying:
Wine represents to us the joy that we have in knowing that through the shed blood of Yahshua we have ceased from our labors and entered into his rest. Through it we remember the price that he paid for our redemption.
The father prays this blessing:
Blessed are you, O Yahweh our Elohim, King of the universe, who creates the fruit of the vine.
All partake of the cup.

Blessing Yahweh for the Bread
The father holds up the bread, saying:
Bread reminds us that we have shared the true bread from heaven in the person of Yahshua, our Master.
The father prays this blessing:
Blessed are you, O Yahweh our Elohim, King of the universe, who brings forth bread from the earth.
All partake of the bread.

Blessings on Wife, Husband, Sons, and Daughters

Call to Worship (based on Hebrews 1:1-3)
Long ago Elohim spoke through the prophets to our ancestors in many and various ways, but now he has spoken a new and living word to us in Yahshua Messiah … He is the reflection of Yahweh’s glory and the exact imprint of Yahweh’s very being, and he sustains all things by his powerful word. Let us worship Yahweh.

Hymn #212 (Burgundy Hymnal, piano accompaniment only)

Yah (God) Speaks To Us
John 14
George W. Warren

Yah (God) speaks to us; by his great pow’r we’re led;
Let not your hearts become disquieted.
You trust in Yah (God), believe and trust in Me;
You trust in Yah (God), believe and trust in Me.

In Yah’s (God’s) vast realm are many offices;
Were it not so I surely would have said;
For I must go, a place for you prepare;
For I must go, a place for you prepare.

And when this place has been prepared for you,
I will return; with me you shall be too;
So that where I am you may also be;
So that where I am you may also be.

Prayer of Praise and Adoration
We praise you, O Yahweh, for breaking through to us in the person of Yahshua, your Son, our Master. When the words of the prophets went unheard and when their actions were ignored, you spoke the creative word once more. Bringing order out of chaos again—this time not to bring a world into being, but to bring your very being into the world. The essence of your love taking on our flesh.
In the midst of your congregation, we praise you.
With our lives, we worship you.
Gracious Yahweh, Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer,
to you be all glory and honor, now and forever. Amen.

**NOTE: Offering a variety of different types of Messianic or sacred name music each week, we will dance before the King much as David danced when he led the Ark up to Jerusalem.

Prayer on the Word
The Resurrection and the Life
        John 11:25
I am the resurrection and the life, they who believe in me though they die, yet shall they live. And whoever lives in me and believes in me shall never die.

Master we believe, assist us to surmount all unbelief.

We know, Holy Source of unfettered life, that we are born to live,
yet inevitably we are also born to die.

Most of the time, we accept our death as a given, and think we have come to terms with it through faith and reasonableness.

Yet we confess to you there are hairline cracks in even the most sophisticated faith, and from time to time the primitive Fear Thing, millions of years old, slips through and mightily shakes the foundation of our being.

At such moments, no amount of theology, or of sweet reason, amount to much. The temptation is to struggle desperately in our own strength, or to pretend amusement and throw cynical barbs at our own absurdity.

Help us at that juncture, loving Yahweh. Still our disquiet and encourage us to let ourselves fall deeper, below the point of the measured and the known, so that we may come to rest again on the bedrock which was laid down long ago by that man who is resurrection and life.

Thank you, Elohim of unmeasured grace, that although death is our fate, it is not our new destiny. Yours is the gift of the life of the ages; that unbounded bonus which no dark thing can ever snatch from those who believe and live in service with your only True Son.

Keep us in faith, trusting that resurrection is not far off but has come among us, full and overflowing with grace and truth.

Master we believe: You are the resurrection and the life, we who believe in You though we die, yet shall we live. And whoever lives in You and believes shall never die.
Amen!

Epistle Scripture Reading
Hebrews 1:1-4 RNKJV
1 Elohim, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,
2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;
3 Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;
4 Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.

Hebrews 2:5-12 RNKJV
5 For unto the angels hath he not put in subjection the world to come, whereof we speak.
6 But one in a certain place testified, saying, What is man, that thou art mindful of him? or the son of man, that thou visitest him?
7 Thou madest him a little lower than the angels; thou crownedst him with glory and honour, and didst set him over the works of thy hands:
8 Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now we see not yet all things put under him.
9 But we see Yeshua, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of YHVH, should taste death for every man.
10 For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.
11 For both he that sanctifieth and they who are set apart are all of one: for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren,
12 Saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the assembly will I sing praise unto thee.

Those Who Walk With Messiah

Those who walk with Messiah
shan’t live like lords or kings,
but they shall know the hidden joy
which pulses through all things.

Those who embrace his truth
need never fear dismay,
though earth and sky dissolve
he will not go away.

Those who dine with him
will never be mislead,
the wisdom of all worlds
hides in each crumb of bread.

Those who die with him
need never die in fear;
he says when evening comes,
“Now you be of good cheer.”

Heritage Prayer
Our Full Humanity
From “Man” by Jurgen Moltmann, Tubingen, Germany, 20th-21st Century
(Slightly adapted from prose to prayer.)

Loving Yahweh,
in you alone we find our full humanity.
In spite of our inhumanity
we have been loved by you,
in spite of our many faults
we have been called to your likeness,
in spite of the aggressive kingdoms of the world
we have been taken into the fellowship of the Son of Man.

Your love has made a loved being
out of an unloved being.
Your call has made a creative life
out of a desolate life.

You give us the will to hope
when there seems nothing left to hope for,
the power to love others
even when we feel unlovely.

You are our joy and salvation!
Amen!

Holy, Mighty Majesty!
Psalm 99
Dwight Armstrong

The Eternal reigneth high above; He is mighty, He is great!
There between the cherubim He sits; let the people praise His name!
He is King and He maintains the right; He restoreth equity;
Worship and exalt the Eternal One! Holy, Mighty Majesty!

The Eternal One is El (God) and King, and He spoke unto His priests;
In the pillar of the cloud He spoke, unto them who kept His law.
Moses is among them, Aaron too; they extolled Yahweh (the Lord) their El (God).
Samuel also called upon His name; Yah (God) did hear, and answered them.

O Eternal, You did answer them; You forgave and you avenged;
So, exalt the One Eternal El (God), Who in Zion is most great!
He is King and He maintains the right; He restoreth equity;
Worship and exalt the Eternal One! Holy, Mighty Majesty!

For Young and Old Alike
The following story, while written for children, speaks to both young and old alike:

Three-year-old Jimmy was visiting his grandparents and he was playing in the garden just outside the back door while his grandmother was making tea. It was getting pretty dark and stormy and she was just going to call Jimmy indoors when there was a flash of lightning. Thinking that Jimmy would be afraid, she rushed to the back door just as he came running in, filled with excitement — “Guess what, Gran,” he shouted, “God just took my photo!”

We know that lightning is not Yahweh taking photos of Jimmy or anyone else, but with the number of photos taken especially of small children, it’s not surprising that Jimmy thought the way he did. Photographs are a good record of what a person looks like. But, when we think about it, just as Yahweh can’t take photos of us, we can’t take photos of Yahweh either. So, how do we know what Yahweh looks like?

In the reading from Hebews, we heard Yahshua described as the “express image of his [Yahweh’s] person.” So, that’s almost as good as a photo, isn’t it? While we haven’t any photos of Yahshua either, we have enough words written about him to know what he was like. A loving, caring, person who wants to put his imprint on us — to make us in his “express image.” As we learn more about his love and then live with his actual love in us, we realize we don’t need a picture of Yahshua to know what he is like, because we’ll know in our own hearts. And we have the written Word of Yahweh that he is the “express image” of his Father.

Prayer of Confession
We read in Hebrews that Yahweh, “for whom and through whom all things exist,” made the pioneer of our salvation “perfect through suffering.”
Master Yahshua Messiah, pioneer of our salvation, the lengths that you were prepared to go to defeat evil and to show us the depths of your love are almost too much for us to grasp. You surrendered any advantage you could have had over us in order to become as we are, and to suffer and even die for our sake, so that we could live abundantly and joyfully, with your powerful life in us.
But we confess that we carry a multitude of unhealed wounds around with us, and within us.
So much of our personal landscapes are filled with the chronic pain of broken relationships and unfulfilled expectations; with emotional, spiritual and physical suffering.
Forgive us, Master, for trying to meet our needs solely out of our own power.
Embrace our weaknesses with your strength.
our brokenness with your wholeness,
our suffering with your healing,
our fears with your peace.
Remind us that when we bring our weariness and heavy burdens to you,
you will give us rest.
Master Yahshua Messiah, pioneer of our salvation, receive these our prayers, for we offer them in your name. Amen.

Assurance of Forgiveness
Through his suffering and death, Yahshua rescued us from lives dominated by evil and sin. He is the source of our salvation. Hear then the good news that in and through Yahshua Messiah we are forgiven.
Thanks be to Yahweh.

Reading from the Hebrew Scriptures
Job 1:1 RNKJV
1 There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared Elohim, and eschewed evil.

Job 2:1-10 RNKJV
1 Again there was a day when the sons of Elohim came to present themselves before YHVH, and Satan came also among them to present himself before YHVH.
2 And YHVH said unto Satan, From whence comest thou? And Satan answered YHVH, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.
3 And YHVH said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth Elohim, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause.
4 And Satan answered YHVH, and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life.
5 But put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse thee to thy face.
6 And YHVH said unto Satan, Behold, he is in thine hand; but save his life.
7 So went Satan forth from the presence of YHVH, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown.
8 And he took him a potsherd to scrape himself withal; and he sat down among the ashes.
9 Then said his wife unto him, Dost thou still retain thine integrity? curse Elohim, and die.
10 But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of Elohim, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips.

Gospel Reading
Mark 10:2-16 RNKJV
2 And the Pharisees came to him, and asked him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife? tempting him.
3 And he answered and said unto them, What did Moses command you?
4 And they said, Moses suffered to write a bill of divorcement, and to put her away.
5 And Yeshua answered and said unto them, For the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept.
6 But from the beginning of the creation YHVH made them male and female.
7 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife;
8 And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh.
9 What therefore YHVH hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
10 And in the house his disciples asked him again of the same matter.
11 And he saith unto them, Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her.
12 And if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she committeth adultery.
13 And they brought young children to him, that he should touch them: and his disciples rebuked those that brought them.
14 But when Yeshua saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of YHVH.
15 Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of YHVH as a little child, he shall not enter therein.
16 And he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blessed them.

Hymn #121 (Burgundy Hymnal, piano accompaniment only)

Thou Shepherd That Dost Israel Keep
Psalm 80
Dwight Armstrong

Thou Shepherd that dost Israel keep, Give ear in time of need;
Who leadest like a flock of sheep Thy loved one, Joseph’s seed.
That sit’st between the Cherubs bright, Between their wings out-spread;
Shine forth, and from Thy cloud give light, And on our foes Thy dread.

In Ephraim’s and in Benjamin’s view, And in Manassah’s sight,
Awake thy strength, come, and be seen To save us by Thy might.
Turn us again; thy grace divine To us, O Yah (God), vouchsafe;
Cause Thou, Thy face on us to shine, For then we shall be safe.

Yahweh (Lord God) of Hosts, how long wilt Thou, How long wilt thou declare
Thy smoking wrath, and angry brow, Against thy people’s prayer?
Return to us Thy grace divine, O Yah (God) of Hosts vouchsafe;
Cause Thou, Thy face on us to shine, For then we shall be safe.

Creed and Affirmation
Trust and Obey

I pass on to each of you
what we have first received
from a friend of the Master Yahshua:
“They who believe, obey,
and all who obey will believe.”

Though shadows arise,
and clouds fill the skies,
there’s nothing can drive you away.
Not a sigh nor a tear, not a frown nor a fear,
can win while we trust and obey..

We shall trust and obey,
for there’s no other way
to be happy in Yahshua,
but to trust and obey.

There’s no burden we bear
and no sorrow we wear,
that can outwear his love for our clay.
Not a joy nor a pain,
not a loss nor a gain,
but is shared if we trust and obey.

They who believe, obey,
and all who obey will believe.

We shall trust and obey,
for there’s no other way
to be happy in Yahshua,
but to trust and obey.

The Shema
       Hear, O Israel, Yahweh our Elohim is One. Blessed be the name of Yahweh whose glorious kingdom is forever! You shall love Yahweh your Elohim with all of your heart. You shall love Yahweh your Elohim with all of your soul. You shall love Yahweh your Elohim with all of your mind. You shall love Yahweh your Elohim with all your strength.
       And these words, which I am instructing you today, shall be on your heart, and you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them, when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up. And you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets on your forehead. And you shall write them on the doorposts of your house, and on your gates. (Deut. 6:6-9)

       Yahshua said, “You shall love Yahweh your Elohim with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.” This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matt. 22:37-39)

Closing Prayer
Receive and bless the gift of our lives, O Yahweh, for we offer them in response to the great gift of your Word to us — Yahshua, our Savior and Master. May our lives reflect your glory and bear the imprint of your love as we reach out to others in Yahshua’s name. Amen.

Aaronic Blessing
Yahweh bless you and keep you: Yahweh make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you: Yahweh lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace.
